This conference was held by ALECSO on September 28-30, 2016, in collaboration with the International Association of Smart Learning Environments, the Research Laboratory in ICT and Electrical Engineering at the University of Tunis, and the Association for Training and Innovation in Information Science and Management in Kairouan.
The conference attracted participants from all over the world, including from Tunisia, Taiwan, Canada, China, Romania, Libya, Algeria, Brazil, Palestine, France, Britain, Spain, Senegal, USA, India, Saudi Arabia, Sweden, and Jordan. This wide participation reflects the increasing importance granted to “Smart Learning” by interested researchers and academicians.
In his opening remarks, the Director-General of ALECSO underlined the need to make the most of ICTs in the service of learning and education, by promoting the use of these technologies in educational institutions by teachers and learners, as part of clearly defined national strategies that are aligned with the realities of Member States. He highlighted ALECSO’s efforts in this regard, particularly the ICT Department’s projects to promote Smart Learning, Open Educational Resources and MOOC courses in the Arab World.
The Director of the ICT Department gave a lecture on ALECSO’s mobile applications project and its role in enhancing Smart Learning. He underlined, in this regard, the importance of mobile applications in promoting digital economy and highlighted the promising opportunities they offer, particularly to young people. He insisted that mobile devices and applications offer true opportunities for effective and flexible learning, and for creativity and innovation.
This conference was organized by ALECSO and ISESCO, in cooperation with ENSIAS College of Engineering, Mohammed V University of Rabat, the Research Laboratory of Technologies of Information and Communication and Electrical Engineering (LaTICE), University of Tunis, in Marrakech, Morocco, on December 21-23, 2015.
This conference offered an opportunity for Arab researchers to make known their scientific outputs and be acquainted with the latest scientific research in this field.
This conference received technical support from IEEE, and a copy of the working papers was sent to IEEE Xplore website.
This forum took place in Dubai, UAE, on December 14-16, 2015. It was organized by ALECSO in cooperation with the ITU Arab Regional Office, and hosted by the UAE Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA). It was held as part of ALECSO’s Education Development Plan 2008-2018, the ITU Arab Regional Office’s Action Plan for 2015, and the initiative adopted at the World Telecommunication Development Conference (Dubai, 2014) for the Arab region on Smart Learning. It aimed at to bringing all education and ICT stakeholders on the same table to come out with a common understanding and vision with regard to smart learning in the Arab region.
A study prepared by a panel of experts commissioned by ALECSO and the ITU Arab Regional Office in cooperation with “Intel” and “Millennium@EDU”, which provides guidelines for formulating national strategies on Smart Learning, was presented during the event.
The Forum was an opportunity to highlight the relevant practical steps taken by ALECSO, as well as the innovative strategic projects launched in the field of education and research, including the project to develop the use of Cloud Computing, the project to promote Arab mobile applications, and the project to promote access to open educational resources. All these projects intersect with Smart Learning, and use ICT as a key tool to upgrade educational systems in Member States and enhance their performance, so that they can effectively contribute to sustainable development and human progress.
