ALECSO participates in the Opening of the 8th Arab Governance Forum in Tunisia

The Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO) participated, on 12 October 2026, in the opening of the 8th Arab Governance Forum, organized by the Arab Administrative Development Organization (ARADO) in cooperation with ALECSO. The three-day Forum was held under the theme “Strengthening Oversight and Governance in the Era of Artificial Intelligence: The Role of Leadership and Supreme Councils in Promoting Good Governance.”

Speaking on behalf of H.E. Dr. Mohamed Ould Amar, Director-General of ALECSO, Dr. Mohamed Jemni, Director of ICT, emphasized the importance of governing AI applications and deploying them responsibly to enhance transparency and institutional oversight, improve operational efficiency, and anticipate risks, while ensuring data protection and privacy and upholding the principles of fairness and accountability. He noted that governance in the age of artificial intelligence rests on two complementary tracks: leveraging these technologies to strengthen oversight and governance, and establishing frameworks to ensure their safe, transparent, and responsible use. He stressed that responsibility for artificial intelligence is no longer merely a technical matter, but has become an institutional and strategic responsibility requiring the active involvement of senior leadership and decision-makers.

Dr. Jemni highlighted ALECSO’s efforts in artificial intelligence, digital transformation, capacity-building, and AI ethics. In this context, he referred to the Arab Charter on AI Ethics, and underscored the importance of translating its principles into practical policies within institutions. He further emphasized the need to strengthen Arab cooperation and exchange expertise to ensure that these technologies are harnessed effectively to serve people and address the priorities of Arab societies.

Concluding his address, Dr. Jemni noted that the Forum forms part of the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between ALECSO and ARADO, which aims to develop joint initiatives, build capacities, and facilitate the exchange of expertise in support of AI governance and digital transformation, thereby contributing to the development of more efficient and transparent Arab institutions.
