The Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO) extends its warmest congratulations to the Leadership, Government, and people of the Union of the Comoros on the inscription of the Medinas of the Historic Sultanates of the Comoros on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The decision was adopted by the World Heritage Committee during its 48th session, held in Busan, Korea.
This inscription marks a historic achievement for the Union of the Comoros. The property comprises six historic towns: four on the main island of Grande Comore and two on the smaller island of Anjouan. These towns stand as exceptional testimonies to the archipelago’s rich civilizational and cultural heritage. They embody outstanding historical, architectural, and human values, reflecting centuries of interaction among civilizations and cultures across the Indian Ocean.
This inscription is of particular significance, as it represents the Comoros’ first site to be inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. It reflects the success of national efforts to protect and present the country’s cultural heritage in accordance with the highest international standards. It also demonstrates the State’s commitment to preserving its civilizational legacy and enhancing its international visibility.
ALECSO commends the efforts of the national authorities, scientific teams, and experts involved in preparing the nomination file. It emphasizes that this achievement constitutes a valuable addition to Arab, African, and global heritage, enriching the cultural and civilizational diversity of the region.
