ALECSO holds Workshop in Nouakchott on the  Management and Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage

 

 

A workshop on the Management and Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage kicked off on January 8, 2026 in the Mauritanian capital, Nouakchott. The workshop is organized by ALECSO in collaboration with the Mauritanian Ministry of Culture, Arts, Communication and Relations with Parliament, and the Mauritanian National Commission for Education, Culture and Science.

The opening session was attended by H.E. Dr. Mohammed Ould Amar, Director-General of ALECSO, H.E. Mr. Houssein Ould Medou, Mauritanian Minister of Culture, Arts, Communication and Relations with Parliament, Mr. Mohammed Ould Sidi Abdallah, Secretary-General of the Mauritanian National Commission for Education, Culture and Science, along with experts and representatives of relevant national institutions.

The workshop was designed to strengthen national capacities in the management, protection, and safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage, by introducing modern concepts and approaches adopted in this field, exchanging expertise on inventorying and documentation mechanisms, and developing sustainable safeguarding plans, in line with the provisions of the 2003 UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.

In their opening remarks, speakers emphasized the paramount importance of intangible cultural heritage as a fundamental pillar of cultural identity and an effective contributor to sustainable development. They also stressed the necessity of involving local communities in protection and safeguarding efforts, while ensuring the transmission of this rich cultural heritage to future generations.

This workshop is part of a series of training events supervised by ALECSO in several Arab countries, within the framework of its strategy aimed at supporting Member States in fulfilling their international commitments and strengthening joint Arab cooperation in the protection and safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage.
