ALECSO participates in Regional Roundtable on AI and Sustainability

The Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO), represented by Dr. Mohamed Jemni, Director of ICT, took part in the 2nd Regional Roundtable on “AI and Sustainability: From Innovation to Impact.” The event was held on December 1, 2025, as part of the Regional Summit on “AI Towards the Future – From Information Society to Intelligence Society", taking place in Tunis, Tunisia.

In his intervention, Dr. Jemni emphasized the importance of linking innovation in AI technologies with the requirements of sustainability in the Arab region. He pointed out that AI has now become one of the key drivers for achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, in terms of resource management, climate change response, improved education and healthcare service quality, or support to green and digital economy.

Dr. Jemni indicated that leveraging the potential of artificial intelligence requires the establishment of sound and ethical governance frameworks that ensure the responsible and equitable use of digital technologies, and prevent the exacerbation of the digital divide or infringement on privacy and human rights. He highlighted, in this context, the significance of the ALECSO Charter on AI Ethics, prepared by the Organization to serve as a unified Arab reference in this field.

Dr. Jemni provided an overview of ALECSO's main projects and initiatives in recent years, including:

  • The “ALECSO Charter on AI Ethics” and its contribution to supporting national policies;
  • “Sustainable digital transformation in education” programs, implemented in cooperation with universities and international partners;
  • Initiatives for building digital capacities and green skills, through the “Arab Code Week” competitions and teacher training programs;
  • Efforts to enhance Arabic digital content and protect cultural identity in the digital space;
  • Support for Member States in formulating national AI policies and strategies.

Dr. Jemni concluded by stressing the importance of enhancing Arab, regional, and international cooperation in the field of artificial intelligence and sustainability,  through developing unified legislation, investing in data infrastructure, launching joint research and innovation programs, and building human capacities as a key pillar for transitioning from innovation to impact. He indicated that ALECSO continues to work jointly with its partners to reinforce expertise and develop sustainable digital projects that contribute to achieving development goals across the Arab world.
