During an event hosted at Hamad Bin Khalifa University in the State of Qatar, and in collaboration with the Qatari National Commission for Education, Culture, and Science, the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization announced the ALECSO List of Arab Scientific Research Centers. The first edition of the List (2025–2026) is devoted to research centers specialized in renewable energy.
In his opening remarks, H.E. Dr. Mohamed Ould Amar, Director-General of ALECSO, stressed that the launch of this List is a pioneering project. The first of its kind, this initiative reflects ALECSO’s belief in the pivotal role of Arab research centers in promoting sustainable development, addressing current challenges, enhancing the implementation of the Arab Strategy for Scientific Research, Technology and Innovation, and strengthening cooperation among research institutions in the Arab world. He commended, in this regard, the efforts of Hamad Bin Khalifa University and the Qatari National Commission in hosting this scientific event.
Dr. Eyad Masad, Vice-President for Research at Hamad Bin Khalifa University, expressed the University’s pride in hosting the event, emphasizing the importance of such initiatives in opening broad prospects for scientific research cooperation among Arab academic and research institutions.
Dr. Salem Al-Mansoori, Consultant at the Qatari National Commission for Education, Culture, and Science and representative of the Secretary-General of the Commission, affirmed the continued support and cooperation in implementing ALECSO’s activities, as part of Qatar’s efforts to promote excellence in science and scientific research.
Dr. Mohamed Sanad Abu Darwish, Director of Science and Scientific Research at ALECSO, offered an overview of the stages of the preparation and launching of the List. He indicated that 35 Arab research centers had submitted applications, and that the evaluation process, conducted by a panel of specialized experts, resulted in the inclusion of six Arab research centers that met the approved criteria. These are :
- Qatar Environment and Energy Research Institute, Qatar
- Center for Energy Research and Technology, Tunisia
- Center of Excellence in Environmental and Technological Sciences, Oman
- Research Center for Semiconductor Technology in Energy, Algeria
- Mesopotamian Research Center for Renewable Energy, Iraq
- Electronics Research Institute, Egypt
The event also witnessed the launch of the Arab Guide to Solar and Wind Energy Fields, prepared by ALECSO in collaboration with a group of Arab experts. The Guide serves as a scientific and technical reference highlighting the current status of renewable energy in Arab countries, and the opportunities available in this sector.
The participating experts were honored in recognition of their scientific contributions.
The ceremony was attended by a number of heads of Arab research centers and institutions from the State of Qatar and beyond.
The research centers included in the ALECSO List will receive technical and financial support from ALECSO, through scientific activities and events organized by the Department of Science and Scientific Research at these centers. ALECSO will also link the listed centers with international scientific institutions, and assist in promoting and disseminating their scientific works across the Arab world.
