The Symposium on “The Language Policy System in Arab Countries”, organized by King Salman Global Academy for Arabic Language (KSGAAL) and the Arab League Educational, Cultural, and Scientific Organization (ALECSO), concluded on January 20, 2025.
The closing session discussed the Language Policy System document, the Report on Language Policies in Arab Countries, and the digital platform for the Arab language policy system.
The Symposium concluded with a set of recommendations, mainly :
- Thanking KSGAAL and ALECSO for their relentless efforts in serving the Arabic language in particular, and knowledge and culture in general;
- Commending KSGAAL’s efforts in establishing the Language Policy System project in Arab countries, as well as in collecting, analyzing, and classifying the relevant data, and creating a digital platform to that end;
- Commending ALECSO’s role in examining the project along with the related data and report;
- Thanking ALECSO for hosting the Symposium on the Language Policy System in Arab Countries;
- Commending the outcomes of the Arab Language Policy System project and the expected positive impact in terms of enhancing the presence of the Arabic language, promoting interest in building language policies, and monitoring their implementation;
- Capitalizing on the recommendations and proposals included in the report on the Arab Language Policy System project;
- Making the report available to relevant stakeholders, including decision-makers, executives, researchers, investors, media professionals, educators, and others.
- Calling on Arab League Member States to increase the attention paid to language policies, as well as to develop and implement clear action plans in this regard, while ensuring that these plans are supervised by executive authorities and are adequately resourced;
- Emphasizing the importance of focusing on the scientific vision of language policies and their application, through scientific studies that track language policies, monitor their impact, and evaluate their implementation on a regular basis;
- Encouraging the pooling of efforts by executive bodies within each country to develop effective and adequate language policies based on accumulated experiences and best practices;
- Strengthening cooperation among institutions concerned with the Arabic language (within the same country and in different countries) in developing language policies and following up their implementation;
- Ensuring that language policies cover all societal areas, including economy, media, scientific research, health, and technology;
- Enhancing the place of Arabic in educational curricula, developing Arabic language education, and promoting the Arabization of education;
- Supporting scientific studies that monitor language policies and their implementation, establishing specialized research centers in this field, and benefiting from relevant global experiences;
- Increasing research and intensifying activities related to language planning.
Following the reading of the Symposium’s recommendations, Dr. Mohamed Ould Amar, ALECSO Director-General, and Dr. Khaled Al-Qousi, Director of Language Policy at KSGAAL, exchanged commemorative shields.
