ALECSO participates in “Arab Literacy Day” celebration at Arab League headquarters

 

Under the patronage of H.E. Mr. Mohamed Abdel Latif, Minister of Education and Technical Education of the Arab Republic of Egypt, and at the kind invitation of the Egyptian General Authority for Adult Education, and under the supervision of the League of Arab States, (Department of Education and Scientific Research), the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO) took part in the celebration event to mark the Arab Literacy Day, observed annually on January 8th. The celebration was held on January 14, 2025 at the Arab League Headquarters, under the theme of “The Future of Adult Education and Learning in Egypt and the Arab World". 

Addressing the event, Ms. Jalila Labidi, ALECSO’s representative, conveyed the greetings of H.E. Dr. Mohamed Ould Amar, Director-General of ALECSO, and his best wishes for the success of the celebration.  She noted that ALECSO’s participation in this event is part of the ongoing  attention it pays to literacy and adult education in the Arab world, being a key driver of sustainable development. She stressed the need for collaboration among all stakeholders to meet challenges associated with literacy and adult education. She indicated that this event offers a renewed opportunity to support Arab efforts in promoting the right to education, equal opportunities, and lifelong learning.

Ms. Jalila Labidi presented details of ALECSO’s work program in this area, as part of its Action Plan for the period 2023-2028. Focus is laid, in this program, on developing policies for the promotion of literacy, adult education and lifelong learning. These efforts  aim at combating illiteracy, responding to the learning needs of illiterates, adopting new educational approaches, promoting the use of modern technologies, and providing tools and training programs to enhance the capacities of women and girls so that they can actively contribute to socio-economic development.
