The 4th Arab Mathematics Olympiad, hosted by the State of Qatar on November 10-14, 2024, was officially inaugurated by H.E. Dr. Mohamed Ould Amar, Director-General of ALECSO, and H.E. Ms. Buthaina bint Ali Al-Jabr Al-Nuaimi, Minister of Education and Higher Education of Qatar.
In his statement on this occasion, the Director-General expressed his sincere thanks to the Leadership, government, and people of the State of Qatar for their warm welcome, generous hospitality, and excellent organization of this important scientific and educational event.
The Director-General noted that since its inception, ALECSO has always been working, jointly with its Member States, to promote education for all, in implementation of its action plans and in line with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, particularly Goal 4 which aims to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education. In this regard, ALECSO has implemented various projects and programs that prioritize mathematics, science, and technology in education policies and practices, including the latest advancements in artificial intelligence.
The Director-General recalled that ALECSO had first launched the Arab Mathematics Olympiad in 2018 as an educational activity designed to offer students from across the Arab world the opportunity to engage in positive competition and to develop their analytical and problem-solving skills through mathematics. He highlighted the programs organized by ALECSO in this regard, including the Arab Championship of Mathematics and Logic Games, the Arab Mathematics Platform, and the Arab Code Week.
For her part, the Qatari Minister expressed her delight at Qatar’s hosting of the Arab Mathematics Olympiad, describing it as a unique scientific event that offers students the opportunity to compete in mathematics. She underlined the significant role of the Olympiad in fostering communication among Arab students, boosting the sense of excellence, creativity, talent, and self-confidence, and increasing interest in mathematics curricula and teaching methods. She added that upgrading curricula to improve quality of education and enhance students' skills is now a pressing need in order to be able to keep pace with the rapid technological advancements in today’s world.
The Arab Mathematics Olympiad is one of the most significant mathematics competitions for students in the Arab world. The first edition took place in Saudi Arabia in 2018, the second in Egypt in 2020, and the third in Tunisia in 2022.
