Upon the kind invitation of the Tunisian Ministry of Social Affairs, and under the patronage of H.E. Mr. Issam Lahmar, Minister of Social Affairs, the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO) (Education Department) took part in the National Symposium held in celebration of International Literacy Day, under the theme of "Formal and Non-Formal Education: Integration and Partnership."

The event, organized by the National Center for Adult Education on September 9, 2024, saw the participation of representatives from the Tunisian National Commission for Education, Science, and Culture, DVV International, and relevant national institutions, along with several education experts.

Addressing the Symposium, the representative of ALECSO began by conveying the greetings of H.E. Dr. Mohamed Ould Amar, Director-General of ALECSO, and his wishes for the success of this event. She emphasized that ALECSO’s participation aligns with its keen interest in literacy and adult education as key drivers for development. She highlighted ALECSO's significant efforts in combating illiteracy as part of joint Arab action, in line with the orientations of national governments and educational leaderships in Arab countries. She reviewed some of the relevant statistical indicators released by ALECSO's Observatory, according to which the number of illiterate individuals in the Arab world is estimated to reach 98.609 million by 2030, a staggering figure that necessitates urgent and practical strategic solutions.
