The Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO), represented by Dr. Mohamed Jemni, Director of ICT Department, took part in the Digital Learning Week 2024 organized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in Paris, France, on September 2-5, 2024.
This event is part of global efforts to enhance digital education and leverage modern technologies, including artificial intelligence, to improve education worldwide, with particular focus on the Arab region.
In a lecture he delivered on September 3rd entitled : “Ethical AI in Education : Challenges and Opportunities for the Arab World”, Dr. Jemni reviewed ALECSO’s efforts to promote digital transformation and the use of artificial intelligence in education. He stressed the importance of adhering to ethical standards in the development and use of these technologies in order to make sure their benefits are realized without compromising cultural and social values.
Dr. Jemni also highlighted ALECSO's initiatives for developing and implementing AI policies in education, including organizing workshops and training programs on AI ethics, and supporting research and studies in this field. He underlined, in this regard, the necessity of formulating an Arab AI Ethical Charter, aimed at protecting Arab values and traditions in the face of modern technological challenges.
Dr. Jemni addressed ALECSO’s role in promoting digital transformation in the Arab world, noting the significance of educational initiatives such as the “Arab Code Week” which seeks to encourage children and youth to learn coding from an early age, and therefore prepare a generation capable of handling cutting-edge technologies.
Dr. Jemni underscored the importance of collaborating with international institutions to strengthen ethical frameworks for AI use in education, and the need to expand partnerships between ALECSO and international organizations like UNESCO to achieve digital transformation goals in the region.
Dr. Jemni recommended increasing awareness about AI ethics in the Arab world through training and awareness programs targeting all segments of society. He also underlined the importance of ALECSO’s continued support for projects focused on developing AI locally, in a manner that aligns with the specificities of Arab culture and the Arabic language.
ALECSO’s participation in UNESCO’s Digital Learning Week 2024 has enabled it to reinforce its leading role in supporting digital transformation in education in the Arab world, to strengthen its international visibility, and to share its visions and expertise with the global community, thereby contributing to developing a comprehensive vision for sustainable digital education.
