ALECSO holds workshop in Aden on the   Protection and Preservation of Intangible Cultural Heritage

 

 

The Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO) held, on July 8-10, 2024, in Aden, Yemen, a workshop on “The Protection and Preservation of Intangible Cultural Heritage”.

The workshop was inaugurated by Mr. Mohammed Al-Shaibi, Deputy Minister of Culture, and Mr. Iqbal Yassin Bahader, Deputy Director of the Office of the President of the Republic of Yemen.

The three-day workshop was organized by the Yemeni National Commission for Education, Culture and Science, under the patronage of H.E. Mr. Tareq Salem Al-Akbari, Minister of Education and President of the Commission, and H.E. Mr. Muammar Al-Eryani, Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism, with support from ALECSO. It was attended by 20 participants from the Ministry of Culture and Information and from civil society organizations.

The workshop was designed to strengthen the capacities of specialists and workers in the field of intangible cultural heritage, by deepening their understanding of the central concepts of the 2003 Convention and the international standards for the inventorying of cultural heritage properties.  The workshop also aimed at training participants on integrating cultural heritage into sustainable development, and at providing them with a range of skills and techniques for preparing nomination files for inscription on UNESCO’s heritage lists.

Dr. Imed Bin Soula, Cultural Heritage Expert at ALECSO, offered a presentation on intangible cultural heritage and its preservation, as well as on the methodology for inventorying intangible cultural heritage properties.
