First Arab forum for Adult Education and Lifelong Learning

 

Under the patronage of H.E. Dr. Mohamed Ould Amar, Director-General of ALECSO, and in coordination with the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States (Social Affairs Sector, Department of Education and Scientific Research), the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (Education Department and the Cairo-based Institute of Arab Research and Studies) organized the First Arab Forum for Adult Education and Lifelong Learning.

The Forum was held on July 3-4, 2024, in hybrid format, with the participation of nine (9) Arab States: Jordan, Tunisia, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Oman, Qatar, Libya, and Egypt. It was also attended by delegations from Arab civil society institutions and universities partnering in the implementation of the Arab Literacy Decade (2015-2024), in addition to a large number of relevant experts and researchers from Egypt.

The opening session featured statements by the ALECSO representatives at the Forum, Dr. Mohammed Mustafa Kamal, Director of the Institute of Arab Studies and Research, and Dr. Rami Iskander, Director of the Education Department, in which they conveyed the greetings of H.E. Dr. Mohamed Ould Amar, Director-General ALECSO, to all participants and his wishes for the success of this event. 

As conceived by ALECSO and the Arab League General Secretariat, the Forum is designed to bring together  officials and other stakeholders in the field of adult education to share experiences, showcase national plans, develop future visions consistent with national needs and regional and international commitments, discuss relevant issues and challenges, and put forward proposals to promote adult education and lifelong learning.

Day 1 of the Forum featured presentations on:

  • The achievements of the League of Arab States as part of the Arab Literacy Decade;
  • ALECSO’s efforts and future directions in the field of adult education and lifelong learning;
  • The efforts of Arab countries, League of Arab States, and ALECSO in the implementation of the Arab Literacy Decade;
  • Lifelong learning and artificial intelligence
  • Arab countries’ strategies and plans in the field of adult education and lifelong learning

Day 2 was devoted to presentations by the representatives of civil society institutions partnering in the implementation of the Arab Literacy Decade, as well as to discussing the broad lines of the Arab Literacy Decade in its second phase.
