In line with the vision and directives of ALECSO's Director-General, Dr. Mohamed Ould Amar, to increase cooperation with global and Arab organizations in pursuit of shared goals, and to further publicize ALECSO’s efforts for promoting the dissemination of science and knowledge in the Arabic language, ALECSO signed an agreement with UNESCO to translate key reports into Arabic, including the GEM Report, Gender Report and Youth Report.
The agreement was signed, on behalf of ALECSO, by Dr. Mohamed Sanad Abu Darwish, Director of the Department of Science and Scientific Research, representing the Director-General, and on behalf of UNESCO, by Ms. Stefania Giannini, Assistant Director-General for Education, representing the Director-General of UNESCO.
This agreement is aligned with the goals set out in the Arab Strategy for Scientific, Research, Technology and Innovation, whose follow-up was entrusted to ALECSO, and which calls for increasing cooperation with international institutions and organizations, supporting scientific publishing in the Arabic language, and promoting the dissemination of scientific culture in Arab societies.
The agreement was signed during the 9th meeting of the Advisory Board of the GEM Report, held on June 25-26, 2024 at UNESCO headquarters in Paris. ALECSO has been a member of this Board since 2023.
The meeting featured a presentation on the achievements of the GEM Report team, its plan for the coming years up to 2030, and the Board members’ suggestions and recommendations on developing the implementation of the plan.
In his statement to the meeting, Dr. Mohamed Sanad Abu Darwish highlighted ALECSO’s efforts in supporting entrepreneurship and innovation (E&I) among Arab youth through various projects and initiatives. These include :
- The Sustainable Development Forum which ALECSO will hold this year to address E&I in the Arab scientific and academic communities;
- The ALECSO Twinning of Universities Forum, which will focus on green entrepreneurship and environmental volunteer work among Arab university students;
- The ALECSO Olympiad to enhance scientific awareness among Arab children, which aims to stimulate the sense of innovation, research, and teamwork among Arab youth from an early age.
