9th meeting of the Higher Coordination Committee   of the Arab Literacy Decade 2015-2024

 

At the kind initiative of H.E. Dr. Mohamed Ould Amar, Director-General of ALECSO, and in coordination with the General Secretariat of the League of Nations, Social Affairs Sector, Department of Education and Scientific Research, ALECSO hosted, on December 5-6, 2023, the 9th meeting of the Higher Coordination Committee of the Arab Literacy Decade 2015-2024. 

The meeting was attended by delegations from 13 Arab countries: Tunisia, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Iraq, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Egypt, and Morocco, along with representatives from partner institutions in implementing the Arab Literacy Decade.  A number of Arab experts, educational leaders, and representatives of relevant civil society organizations participated virtually in the meeting.

In his opening remarks, H.E. Dr. Mohamed Ould Amar, Director-General of ALECSO, welcomed all the participating delegations and wished all success to the meeting. He expressed appreciation and gratitude to H.E. Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, for his continued support for ALECSO and his keen efforts to promote joint Arab action and strengthen cooperation and coordination for the implementation of major Arab projects and initiatives.

The Director-General stressed that ALECSO regularly participates in all the meetings of the Higher Coordination Committee of the Arab Literacy Decade with the aim of supporting the General Secretariat, Member States and all partners organizations by providing the technical support for the implementation of the Arab Literacy Decade.

The Director-General highlighted ALECSO’s efforts to combat illiteracy in line with its relevant strategies and reference documents. He stressed ALECSO’s support for the idea of renewing the Arab Literacy Decade until its goals are met.

The meeting elected Tunisia as Chair of the 9th meeting of the Higher Coordination Committee, and  Egypt and Iraq as members thereof.
