ALECSO holds Workshop on Smart Sustainable Cities

 

Under the supervision of H.E. Director-General, Dr. Mohamed Ould Amar, the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization held, on April 30 - May 3, 2023, a Workshop on Smart Sustainable Cities. The workshop was held under the auspices of H.E. Dr. Mohamed Ayman Ashour, Egyptian Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, and in cooperation with the Egyptian National Commission for Education, Science and Culture.

In his statement to the workshop, Mr. Amine Dahmani, Coordinator of Activities at the Department of Science and Scientific Research, conveyed to all participants the greetings of H.E. Dr. Mohamed Ould Amar, Director-General of ALECSO, and Dr. Mohamed Sanad Abu-Darwish, Director of the Department of Science and Scientific Research, and their best wishes for the success of the workshop. He expressed thanks to Dr. Mohamed Ayman Ashour, Egyptian Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, President of the Egyptian National Commission for Education, Science and Culture, and to the staff of the National Commission, for their cooperation in preparing this workshop.

Mr. Dahmani emphasized the importance of cities in promoting sustainable development, social prosperity, and environmental protection. He highlighted the challenges they face, especially in relation to demographic growth in urban areas as well as climate change and its impact on resources, health and infrastructure. He stressed the importance of the “Smart Sustainable City” approach as a framework that combines sustainable development, technological innovation, and digital and social transformation. 

Mr. Dahmani reviewed the objectives set for this activity, particularly contributing to achieving the targets of SDG 11 (“Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable”), raising awareness of the need to incorporate sustainable development concepts in the planning process for the City of the Future,  identifying the responsibilities of authorities, society, and the private sector for achieving the set goals, and highlighting the role of ICT in promoting Smart Sustainable Cities.

The workshop was attended by 25 trainees from Egyptian ministries, universities and research centers interested in smart sustainable cities.
