A delegation headed by H.E. Dr. Mohamed Ould Amar, Director-General of ALECSO, attended, on March 20, 2023, in Doha, Qatar, the ceremony of the Arab Scientific Community Organization to announce the winner of the ArSCO Encouragement Award for 2022, organized by ArSCO jointly with ALECSO and other relevant Arab institutions.
The delegation included Mr. Mohammed Sanad Abu Darwish, Director of the Science and Scientific Research Department, and Ms. Khairiya Sallami, Project Coordinator at the same department.
The ceremony was attended by the Ambassador of the Arab Republic of Egypt, the Secretary-General of the Qatar National Commission for Education, Culture and Science, the Head of the Science and Scientific Research Division at the Qatar National Commission, along high-profile Qatari personalities and relevant experts from Jordan, Mauritania and France.
In his opening remarks, the Director-General stressed that promoting scientific research in the Arab world is a permanent necessity in an era where changes and transformations in all fields of life are taking place at an ever-accelerating pace, and where science and knowledge are key prerequisites to any development and progress.
The ArSCO Award for 2022 was won by Dr. Gomaa Abdel-Gawad Mohamed Ali, from Egypt, a research professor at the Faculty of Science (Al-Azhar University - Assiut), for his outstanding research efforts that culminated in the development of new materials for the purification of polluted water.
The 2022 edition of the ArSCO Award was devoted to the issue of water shortage/scarcity, being one of the key challenges for many Arab countries, especially those in arid or semi-arid regions, resulting from various factors including inadequate rainfall, poor water supply infrastructure, as well as waste and mismanagement of water resources.
It is worth recalling that ALECSO and ArSCO had signed a cooperation agreement in November 2020. This partnership involves the organization of scientific forums and symposiums, as well as the implementation of programs designed to motivate Arab researchers to engage in innovative research in pursuit of sustainable development.
