The Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO) and the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) signed, on December 9, 2022, at the IsBD headquarters in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, an agreement on “Developing a Common Framework of Reference for the Arabic Language: Teaching, Learning and Assessment”. The main purpose of the project is to promote the use of Arabic as a language and a means of development and scientific research.

Under this agreement, the IsDB will contribute to the financing of the project, and ALECSO will be the executing body thereof.

The project involves developing a common reference framework for the Arabic language to standardize curricula, educational practices, and assessment mechanisms.  It is designed to strengthen economic and social ties between the member States of the IsDB Group, by promoting and facilitating the use of Arabic as a common language for communication in all fields, a means of development, and a tool of scientific research.

In his remarks on this occasion, H.E. Dr. Mohamed Ould Amar, Director-General of ALECSO, conveyed his thanks to H.E. Dr. Muhammad Al Jasser, President of IsDB Group, for this kind initiative that comes to further strengthen relations between the two institutions in the service of the Arabic language. He expressed appreciation of the efforts made for the conclusion of this agreement which includes programs that will benefit all Arab States.

The Director-General underlined the importance of continued cooperation between ALECSO and the IsDB, and highlighted the significant efforts made by both parties in their endeavor to achieve common goals and to contribute more effectively to education development programs in the targeted countries.

For his part, the IsDB President pointed out that the Technical Assistance Grant Agreement will help develop a unified method for Arabic language teaching and learning, and coordinate teacher competency assessment. He indicated that the Framework of Reference will be freely available to all institutions involved in the teaching and learning the Arabic language. He highlighted the IsDB’s experience in promoting the use of the Arabic language through the bilingual education program in sub-Saharan Africa, and its success in linking the formal education system with the traditional Islamic one, which has helped increase enrollment and incorporate parallel systems.
