The Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization took part in the 8th meeting of the Higher Coordination Committee of the Arab Literacy Decade (2015-2024).
The meeting was held on November 29-30, 2022, at the headquarters of the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States, in Cairo, Egypt,
ALECSO was represented by Mrs. Jalila Abidi, Program Coordinator at the Education Department. ALECSO was elected General Rapporteur of this meeting.
The meeting was attended by representatives from specialized Arab and national bodies and institutions, including the General Authority for Literacy and Adult Education, the UNESCO Regional Center for Adult Education, the Arab Network for Literacy and Adult Education, the Arab House of Adult Education and Development (AHAED), the Talal Abu-Ghazaleh Global, and the Arab Scout Organization.
In her statement to the meeting, the ALECSO representative conveyed the greetings of H.E. Dr. Mohamed Ould Amar, Director-General of ALECSO, to H.E. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, as well as to the heads of delegation of Arab States and the representatives of the participating institutions. She indicated that the Director-General is keen on ensuring the continued participation of ALECSO in the implementation of the Arab Literacy Decade, recalling that ALECSO was a strategic partner in launching this initiative in 2015, jointly with the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States. She conveyed the Director-General’s appreciation for the fruitful and continuous cooperation between ALECSO and the General Secretariat in all areas of joint Arab action.
In implementation of the recommendations of the 7th meeting of the Higher Coordination Committee of the Arab Literacy Decade, ALECSO presented a document on “The Interim Assessment of the Arab Literacy Decade 2015-2024”, which includes a vision on the future steps to be taken in light of the Arab States’ observations and global developments in the field of adult learning and education. The document highlights the opportunities, strengths and successes of the Arab Literacy Decade, and presented ALECSO’s vision with regard to the challenges facing the implementation of the Arab Literacy Decade, especially in terms of policies, programs, governance, quality and financing.
The meeting addressed various relevant topics, issued a number of recommendations, and concluded with ALECSO announcing that it would host the 9th meeting of the Higher Coordination Committee of the Arab Literacy Decade in 2023.
