The Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (Department of Science and Scientific Research) held, on September 23, 2021, a hybrid meeting of the Advisory Committee for Science and Scientific Research.
The meeting aimed at formulating projects and activities for the financial period 2023-2024, in line with the priorities and needs of Member States, and based on ALECSO’s Future Plan of Action (2023-2028).
The meeting was chaired by Mr. Amine Dahmani, Acting Director of the Science and Scientific Research Department, and attended by 11 experts from 7 Arab States (Jordan, UAE, Tunisia, Algeria, Iraq, Palestine and Syria), along with a number of Arab experts in the diaspora.
The meeting addressed the ways and means of
- Developing the Arab scientific research system and promoting continuous education/learning;
- Launching Arab projects to tackle major challenges relating to specific issues, including smart cities, smart agriculture, food security, and water scarcity;
- Launching joint Arab research programs and establishing the Arab university ranking;
- Building Arab States’ scientific research capacities and supporting innovation and creativity among young people;
- Intensifying student exchange and student mobility programs, and promoting the sharing of experience and expertise among Arab States;
- Enhancing the place of scientific research in local and national economies;
- Promoting scientific research ethics in the Arab world and enhancing networking and cooperation among (public and private) scientific research institutions and centers;
- Strengthening regional integration in all fields of development across the Arab world.
The meeting also highlighted the need to promote Arab scientific publishing with a view to raising the status of Arab scholars on the global scene and benefiting from their expertise to serve sustainable development in the Arab countries.
At the end of the meeting, the participants agreed to work jointly with the Department of Science and Scientific Research for the formulation of the proposals, in the form of activities and projects, in line with the resources and capacities of the Organization and the needs and priorities of Member States.
