ALECSO congratulates Jordan on the inscription of   As-Salt City on UNESCO World Heritage List

The Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization is pleased to extend its warmest congratulations to His Majesty King Abdullah II, to the Jordanian people, and to all those in charge of the heritage sector in Jordan, on the inscription of As-Salt City on the World Heritage List during the current 44th session of the World Heritage Committee, held online and chaired from Fuzhou, China, on July 16-31, 2021.

After “Petra”, “Quseir Amra”, “Um er-Rasas”, “Wadi Rum” and the “Baptism Site - Al-Maghtas”, the UNESCO World Heritage List now includes “As-Salt City”, an authentic Jordanian heritage site located on the road leading to Palestine. The site features approximately 650 significant historic buildings exhibiting a blend of European Art Nouveau and Neo-Colonial styles combined with local traditions. The city’s non-segregated development expresses tolerance between Muslims and Christians, making of it “The Place of Tolerance and Urban Hospitality”.

ALECSO takes this opportunity to reaffirm its full readiness to support the nomination files of all its Member States for inscription on UNESCO’s heritage lists.  It stands ready to put at the disposal of all Arab States its capabilities and expertise in terms of heritage inventorying, preservation, documentation, valorization and management, especially as part of cultural tourism and sustainable development projects and programs.
