ALECSO Observatory issues a Bulletin on “How States Use   Digital Technologies to Mitigate the Effects of COVID-19”

The ALECSO Observatory has issued the second statistical bulletin for 2021 under the title : “How States Use Digital Technologies to Mitigate the Effects of COVID-19 on Education, Culture and Science - The Situation in the Arab States.”

The bulletin includes significant data and indicators on :

  • Internet access in the Arab States;
  • Estimated number of students affected during the pandemic;
  • Estimated number of cultural workers and the impact of the pandemic on their activities;
  • Medical fields that use digital technology to accelerate the development of COVID-19 vaccines and medicines.

The available data and indicators show that nearly half of the population of Arab countries have no access to the Internet, despite the pressing need for the Internet during COVID-19, and that in the Arab world, Internet access opportunities vary across countries, between women and men, and between rural and urban areas.

This situation has had adverse effects on several Arab countries, with the diminished possibility of using digital technology to mitigate the negative repercussions of the pandemic on education, culture and science and on the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.
