ALECSO congratulates Libya on its accession to the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage

Following the accession of the State of Libya, a founding member of ALECSO, to the 2003 International Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, to become the 19th Arab state to join this international instrument, the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization is pleased to extend its warmest congratulations to the Libyan people and to all institutions and officials in charge of this sector, for this significant achievement.

Given Libya’s rich intangible heritage, accession to this Convention will offer great opportunities to further enhance and make known this heritage at the global level, which will strengthen the Arab position at the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for Intangible Heritage at UNESCO.

While commending this valuable achievement, ALECSO expresses its full readiness to cooperate with the State of Libya in order to safeguard and valorize this heritage, and to support nomination files for inscription on UNESCO Lists. It calls on the Libyan relevant authorities to pursue efforts to inventory and document the various elements of this type of heritage in order to ensure its preservation, in preparation for the upcoming international events.
