ALECSO Director General participates in national symposium to mark Arab Literacy Day

H.E. Dr. Mohamed Ould Amar, Director-General of ALECSO, took part in a national symposium organized by the Tunisian Ministry of Social Affairs on “Literacy in rural areas : Approaches to women’s economic and social empowerment”. The symposium was held on January 8, 2021 in celebration of the Arab Literacy Day

In his address to the symposium, Dr. Ould Amar highlighted the significant role ALECSO has played in combating illiteracy in all its alphabetical, digital and cultural forms, by developing adequate strategies and plans, conducting relevant research and studies, and offering training-of-trainers sessions under the supervision of specialized experts.  He recalled, in this regard, that ALECSO has, since its inception, given special attention to promoting literacy and adult learning and education (ALE) in its programs and plans. Today, ALECSO continues to cooperate with its member States and strategic partners in order to develop creative solutions to combat the problem of illiteracy. To that end, he added, modern technologies have been harnessed to produce knowledge and ensure access to it for the largest number of learners. Besides, training and upgrading programs have been designed to meet the learners’ expectations and socio-economic needs.

Dr. Ould Amar indicated that ALECSO, despite the exceptional circumstances imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, is keen to provide the needed data and funding to promote literacy and ALE programs. ALECSO, he added, has also worked to strengthen political will by organizing technical ministerial conferences and scientific forums designed to enhance learning opportunities for young people and adults, especially those most in need, and to increase awareness about the importance of knowledge, science and training among citizens, policy-makers, decision-makers, and all other relevant actors and stakeholders.
