The National Artificial Intelligence and Education Forum : Future Foresight and Pioneering Applications, organized by the Omani Ministry of Education, represented by Oman National Commission for Education, Culture and Science, kicked off on October 26, 2020, with the participation of a large number of experts in artificial intelligence and education from international and regional organizations concerned with education, culture and science (UNESCO, ISESCO, ALECSO, and ABEGS), along with academics and educators from relevant Omani authorities and institutions.
The forum was targeted at teachers and administrators in the public education sector and in higher, technical and vocational education sectors, as well as relevant policy-makers and officials.
The forum included several specialized scientific sessions designed to introduce the concept of artificial intelligence, its fields of use, and the mechanisms for investing AI technologies in teaching/learning processes, especially in light of the persistent COVID-19 pandemic. Discussions focused on the future of education in light of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and the Oman Vision 2040. Other themes addressed in this forum included : Capacity-building in AI technologies for Omani teachers; future changes in the education sector and in the Omani and international job markets; current school curricula and their response to future changes; and the ethics of artificial intelligence and education.
As part of this same forum, a virtual session was held on November 2, 2020, during which Dr. Mohamed Jemni, Director of ALECSO’s ICT Department, delivered a paper on “ALECSO’s Directions in Artificial Intelligence and Education, and the Future of the OER Experience”. Dr. Jemni underlined the importance of strengthening teachers’ capabilities in the use of modern technologies.
