As part of cooperation between the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO), the General-Secretariat of the League of Arab States, and the Association of Arab Universities, a meeting of the Committee on Arab University Ranking was held on August 26, 2020 via remote communication technology.
The meeting opened with welcome addresses by H.E. Dr. Haifa Abu Ghazaleh, Assistant Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Head of Social Affairs Sector, H.E. Dr. Mohamed Ould Amar, Director-General of ALECSO, and H.E. Dr. Amr Ezzat Salama, Secretary-General of the Association of Arab Universities. They all underlined the pressing need for an Arab university ranking that meets the Arab specificity and is based on an Arab indicator to assess the performance of higher education institutions, in line with global standards marked by increased competition and labor market pressures.
The meeting was also attended by Dr. Doaa Khalifa, Director of Education and Scientific Research at the League of Arab States, and Eng. Khalaf Aloklah, Acting Director of Science and Scientific Research at ALECSO, along with members of the technical and coordination committee in charge of preparing and following up on the plan for Arab university ranking.
The meeting addressed the draft executive plan for Arab university ranking, presented by Dr. Abdelmajid Ben Amara, Head of the Working Team. Extensive discussions generated a number of recommendations about which the needed action will be taken.
It should be recalled that the Tripartite Committee on Arab University Ranking is composed of ALECSO, the General-Secretariat of the League of Arab States, and the Association of Arab Universities. It was established with the aim of following up the implementation of the Arab university ranking, adopted at the Conference of Arab Ministers of Higher Education and Scientific Research, held in Cairo, Egypt, on December 24-25, 2019.
